If you haven’t had an oppor-
tunity to see our new township sign, we suggest you pack the family in your car and drive by the Sibley Road-Inkster Road intersection and check it out. The sign is prominently dis-
played on the northwest comer
thanks to the kindness of Ron and Carol Bock.
The sign is impressive with its green background and gold leaf lettering. The Redwood
construction and design sug-
gests a “period” design and that fits very nicely in our rural set- ting and compliments our desire to promote our heritage. The sign is complimented by

board, spoke about the place- ment of other signs in the com- munity. Among the sites dis- cussed were the Villages of
“friendly” landscaping that allows the sign to blend in with the neighboring landscaping.
The cost of the sign was underwritten by TDSI, a com- pany located in New Boston. In a recent Huron Township Newsletter, the Township Supervisor praised the compa- ny for being “a good corporate neighbor.” He also thanked Loyer Construction and Straub Architectural Designs for their work on the installation of the sign and the landscaping.
At prior Township Board meetings, the Supervisor as
Waltz, Willow and New Boston. Several organizations have already donated money for future signs. The New Boston sign was recently erect- ed and is a smaller version of the Township sign. It is located on Sibley Road just northwest ef the southbound [-275 exit ramp. It is located on what appears to be MDOT property.
Across town in New Boston, the bridge is finally getting a facelift. After years of neglect, Wayne County has finally start- ed efforts to restore the appear- ance of the bridge. This bridge
wet lo omar)

is of importance to our commu-
. ja
nity because it is one of only
two ways to cross the Huron -
River. It has historical signifi- cance and has long been a major route of travel. Yet sev- eral times it has been allowed to rust. |
Back in the early 80’s the appearance got so bad that sev- eral prominent citizens in the community took it upon them- selves to paint the bridge. The actual paint job wasn’t very good, but it got the point across and the County eventually moved itself to paint the bridge a sky blue. However, years of neglect has again found the bridge in need of attention. Not only does it need painting but the structure has suffered from several collisions.
According to Township Treasurer Adkins, he has called the County several times about the need to repair the guard rails. According to him current plans do not include this repair. Also several board members, notably Trustee Mason -has expressed concern about the structural soundness of the bridge. The bridge was the topic of conversation many times during the period when a portion of I-275 was closed and traffic was rerouted over the bridge. 3
The County issued a report a few years back stating the bridge was safe and indicated there were no plans to do any major repairs. At this time, the board has not decided to do anything more than discuss the condition of the bridge and we can expect the topic to continue to come up on a regular basis.
Traffic has slowed because of the construction, but for the locals, the inconvenience is worth it. It is not known how long it will take to complete the sandblasting and painting but the County seems to be making acceptable progress. So, we have a new sign for
‘the Township, New Boston and
the bridge is being painted. All positive signs of our times.

of them either with a stick or stoné or sometimes stamping on their heads. Across the street from our house and a short way toward the cross road was Frank Andrew’s Harness Shop. Mr. Andrews was one of father’s parish- ioners and a very good friend.
‘ Father took a great deal of pride in his horse and harness and he had a considerable number of straps and harness parts made.
We boys used to hitch our dog to a little-wagon and he
would pull until he was exhausted. Mr. Andrews was much
interested in our doings and one day he had me bring “Goo” into the shop and he measured him for a harness. In
_the course of time the harness
was completed. It consisted of a breast collar, a back pad and real tugs. He trimmed it with real nickel spangles and it was really a work of art and I must say affection for a small boy. I hope I was as appreciative then as [ have been in retro- spect through the years. Father tried to pay Mr. Andrews, but he would not accept anything.
On our side of the street, a short ways away from the church and school toward open country, lived Mr.. and Mrs. Maies. I don’t think Mr. Maies had any special occupa- tion, but was most likely a retired farmer. They kept a cow and we got milk from them. It was my job to go for the milk for which we paid. I think it was four cents a quart. They had a daughter, Minnie, who was also my first school teacher. She later married a man by the name of Frank Root, who was also a school teacher. I had an autograph album, which was much in vogue at that time and in itis a kindly message written by

Minnie Maies. I remember that father was very fond of buttermilk and Mrs. Maies told my mother to send for buttermilk anytime she wanted some. No one ever charged for buttermilk at the time, but I remember how I hated to go and ask for it.
Across the road and still far- ther out was Mr. Utes (Uthes) undertaking, (We called it Oats) establishment. It was a frame building which also housed the house. To me, this place had no charm and was a good place to steer clear of.
My memory of the stores on main street, which was at right angles with ours, is somewhat vague. I remember several old frame stores, which were all general stores. The largest was owned by Ham. Adams, who was also prominent in the affairs of the village and schools. The railroad formed the eastern boundary of the village and was graced with a waiting room and freight shed. The railroad was then known as the Flint and the Pere Marquette, later the Pere Marquette and now as the Chesapeake and Ohio.
The station master was Mr. Maywood and the Maywoods lived in a brick house close to the railroad. There was a large yard with white picket fence. The Maywoods were promi- nent in the church. They had two children; Sam, about my brother’s age, and Vi, a girl my age. I went to play with Vi real often and she often came to our house to play with me. I have a pleasant memory of Vi coming to seem me when I had Chicken Pox and bringing me a little pink cup and saucer. I kept and prized it for many years, when I believe it was smashed by a girl who helped my wife in the kitchen. J still have Vi’s picture and memo- ries of a time when I was six and seven.

This month, in the spirit of Lilith Fair we’ll be focusing on a few of our own female artists. Hope you enjoy. As always contact me _ at jmpclark@globalbiz.net.
Chris Kerwin and Alicia Gibur make up the Royal Oak band, Sister Seed. They have
Bliss Records. The Detroit Free Press says “Sister Seed crafts brisk and buoyant elec- tro-folk-pop that would fit right in at Lilith Fair.” Their “Sunny melodies, savvy popcraft and engaging vocal harmonies” have earned them three Detroit Music Awards for best acoustic group and one for best record. They have been chosen to perform in the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival in upstate New York and have been a featured showcase at the prestigious Kerrville Folk Festival in Kerrville, Texas.
Bob Talbert recently men- tioned in his column that “If You Were Me” was one of the top discs on his play list. ’d have to agree and my favorite cuts are “Unchanging Hand,” “Humble Me” and “Hey My Friend” featuring some tasty harmonica by James Wailin. For more info go _ to www.folkweb.com.
Ann Arbor acoustic folk- rock singer Lisa Hunter has - been called one of the “Metro area’s pre-eminent trouba- dours.” Formerly in the folk rock trio Jane Doe, Hunter is a self described “Funky, melodic folk chick.” Her lat- est CD “Flying” released on a Chicago record label is a
charismatic blend of acc- oustic instruments with elec- tric guitars and a tight rhythm section. Agenda magazine
describes her sound as “A subtle seduction,” while the Detroit Free Press says that she “Paints her folk with
splotches of funk” and that
her new CD has “An infec- tious groove that doesn’t quit.” My favorite cuts from

Rocks
Continued from Page 5 “Upside Down.” Track num- ber two “Trashy” is a fan favorite and could be consid- ered as their theme song ... “You never believed in me, a loser is what you conceived in me, you tried to make me into something I’m not, but I’m trashy in case you forgot. I’m not Barbie nor a _ beauty queen, I’m not Supergirl, I’m just me. Take it or leave it, it’s up to you. Never mind cuz we’re through. I’m trashy, I’m flashy, I’m dirty, I’m flir- ty...” StunGun, they’re cur- rently my favorite guilty plea- sure.
Native Detroiter Michelle Penn delivers hook-laden gui- tar rock with attitude and style. Michelle was a semi- finalist in Musician Magazine for the 1998 best-unsigned band competition, and last year appeared on the main stage at the Lilith Fair Festival.
Often compared _ to Chrissie Hynde, critics have described her as “A rugged,
honeyed voice that writes
tough roots rocking songs that are custom made for tearing up smokey clubs” and as a “Golden-throated electric gui-

tar sorceress.”
Her latest CD “How Do You Live” is “Full on, full- lunged rock for grownups” as stated by Hobey Echlin of the Metro Times. My favorite
cuts are “House Of Blues” and the title cut “How Do You Live.” This one is a must have for your collection. For more info gO to www.michellepenn.com.
